Torque tau = r x F, expanded in Cartesian components gives tau_x = yFz - zFy, tau_y = zFx - xFz, tau_z = xFy - yFx.

Torque about the origin, due to a force F applied at position r (measured from the origin), is defined as the cross product:

tau = r x F

Let the position vector be r = x i + y j + z k, and the force be F = Fx i + Fy j + Fz k, where i, j, k are the unit vectors along the x, y, z axes.

Using the determinant form of the cross product:

tau = | i j k |

| x y z |

| Fx Fy Fz |

Expanding along the first row:

tau = i (yFz - zFy) - j (xFz - zFx) + k (xFy - yFx)

So the Cartesian components of torque are:

tau_x = yFz - zFy …
