A rigid body is an idealized extended body whose shape and size never change under any applied force.

Real bodies deform, however slightly, when forces act on them. To simplify the analysis of the motion of extended objects (as opposed to point particles), physics introduces the idealisation of a rigid body.

A rigid body is defined as a body in which the distances between all pairs of particles making up the body remain constant at all times, regardless of the magnitude or nature of the external forces applied to it. In other words, a rigid body can undergo translational motion (all particles move the same distance) and rotational motion (about some axis), but it cannot deform internally.
