Moment of inertia is the measure of a rotating body's inertia -- its resistance to a change in angular velocity, exactly as mass measures resistance to a change in linear velocity.

In translational motion, Newton's second law F = ma shows that mass m is a measure of inertia -- a body's tendency to resist a change in its state of linear motion; a larger mass needs a larger force to produce the same acceleration.

Similarly, in rotational motion, the equation tau = I alpha shows that moment of inertia I plays the exact analogous role: it measures a body's inertia against angular acceleration, i.e., its tendency to resist a change in its state of rotational motion. For a given applied torque, a body with larger moment of inertia will undergo a smaller angular acceleration (harder to spin up, spin down, or change its rotation rate) than a body with smaller moment of inertia.
