Two equivalent statements of the second law: the Kelvin-Planck statement (no engine converts heat completely into work in a cycle) and the Clausius statement (heat cannot flow, unaided, from a cold body to a hot one).

1. Kelvin-Planck statement. It is impossible to construct a heat engine, operating in a complete cycle, whose sole effect is to absorb heat from a single reservoir (a body at a single, fixed temperature) and convert it entirely into an equivalent amount of mechanical work, with no other change occurring anywhere. In simple terms: no heat engine can have 100% efficiency; some heat must always be rejected to a lower-temperature sink.

2. Clausius statement. It is impossible for any self-acting device (operating without external assistance) to transfer heat continuously from a body at a lower temperature to a body at a higher temperature, without any external work being done on the system. In simple terms: heat does not flow spontaneously from a colder body to a hotter body - a refrigerator or heat pump can only achieve this by having external work done on it.
