Definition

Hotspots (biodiversity hotspots), a concept introduced by Norman Myers, are regions of the Earth that are extremely rich in species diversity, harbour a large number of endemic species (species found nowhere else in the world), and at the same time face a high degree of exploitation and habitat loss. To qualify as a hotspot, a region must contain at least 1,500 endemic vascular plant species and must have already lost at least 70% of its original habitat.
