A biodiversity hotspot has exceptional endemism (many species found nowhere else) combined with severe habitat loss; the Western Ghats & Sri Lanka is an Indian example.

Biodiversity hotspots are regions with very high levels of species richness and a high degree of endemism (species that are exclusively/only found in that region and nowhere else in the world), and which simultaneously face a high degree of threat from habitat loss and degradation. The concept was introduced by Norman Myers; originally 25 hotspots were identified worldwide, and the number has since risen to about 34-36.

Criteria for classifying a region as a biodiversity hotspot:

  1. It must contain at least 1,500 species of vascular plants as endemics — i.e. a high degree of endemism (about 0.5% of the world's plant species).
  2. It must have lost at least 70% of its original habitat — i.e. a high degree of threat. …
