Hotspots are regions with very high biodiversity and endemism that are also under severe threat; they are identified using two criteria — degree of endemism and degree of habitat loss.

Hot-spots

Biodiversity hotspots, a concept introduced by the ecologist Norman Myers, are regions of the world showing exceptionally high species richness together with a high level of endemism (species found nowhere else) — and which are, at the same time, under severe threat from habitat loss and destruction due to human activities. Globally, several dozen such hotspots have been identified (India has four: the Western Ghats–Sri Lanka, the Indo-Burma region, the Himalaya, and Sundaland).

Criteria for determining a hotspot

A region is designated as a biodiversity hotspot if it satisfies both of the following criteria:

  1. High endemism: it must contain at least 1,500 species of vascular plants as endemics (i.e., species that occur nowhere else on Earth).
  2. High degree of threat: it must have already lost at least 70% of its original (primary) natural habitat/vegetation. …
