Normally, the immune system is trained to recognise the body's own molecules and cells as 'self' and does not mount a response against them, while it attacks foreign ('non-self') antigens such as those on pathogens. In auto-immunity, this self-tolerance breaks down: the immune system starts producing antibodies (auto-antibodies) and/or activates immune cells against the person's own tissues and organs, causing tissue damage and disease.
