The condition where the testes fail to descend into the scrotum is called cryptorchidism.

During foetal development the testes originate high up in the abdominal cavity, near the kidneys, and normally migrate downward through the inguinal canal into the scrotal sac shortly before or after birth. This descent is physiologically important because normal spermatogenesis (sperm production) requires a temperature about 2–2.5°C lower than the core body temperature, and the scrotum — being outside the abdominal cavity — provides this cooler environment.
