Population (interspecific) interactions include mutualism (+/+), competition (−/−), parasitism (+/−, prolonged) and predation (+/−, brief and lethal).

Definition

Population interactions are the various types of relationships between two different species (interspecific interactions) sharing a community/habitat. The interaction may benefit both species, harm both, benefit one while harming the other, or benefit/harm one while leaving the other unaffected.

(i) Mutualism vs Competition

  • Mutualism (+/+): both interacting species benefit. Examples: lichens (fungus + alga/cyanobacterium — the alga photosynthesizes and provides food, the fungus provides shelter and absorbs water/minerals); mycorrhizae (fungus associated with plant roots, aiding water/mineral absorption in exchange for carbohydrates); figs and their pollinator wasps (obligate mutualism — the wasp pollinates the fig flowers and lays its eggs inside the fig for its larvae to develop); many plant–pollinator relationships.
  • Competition (−/−): both species are adversely affected because both need, and compete for, the same limited resource (food, space, light, nutrients) — the competing species need not be closely related. Example: flamingoes and resident fishes competing for the same zooplankton food in some South American lakes; the more broadly distributed barnacle Balanus competitively excluding the barnacle Chthamalus from the intertidal zone. The competitive exclusion principle states that two species competing for identical resources cannot coexist indefinitely in the same niche.

(ii) Parasitism vs Predation
