Part 1: Parasitism is a prolonged nutrient-extracting relationship that harms but doesn't outright kill the host, unlike the quick kill-and-eat of predation. OR Part 2: Cleaner fuel, catalytic converters, and emission-check enforcement are the standard measures to curb vehicular air pollution.

Parasitism, with two examples:

Parasitism is an interspecific interaction in which one organism (the parasite) lives in or on the body of another organism (the host) and derives its nutrition at the host's expense, typically causing harm to the host without immediately killing it.

  • Example 1: Cuscuta (dodder), a parasitic flowering plant that has lost chlorophyll; it twines around a host plant's stem and sends haustoria (root-like suckers) into the host's vascular tissue to draw water and nutrients directly from it.
  • Example 2: Ascaris (roundworm) and tapeworms are human endoparasites that live in the intestine, absorbing digested nutrients from the host's gut and depriving the host of nutrition.

How parasitism differs from predation:

  • A predator kills its prey and consumes it immediately/quickly, usually in a single, short interaction; a parasite lives in or on its host over a prolonged period without immediately killing it.
  • Predators are typically free-living and larger than a single prey item they consume; parasites are typically much smaller than their host and often highly host-specific (adapted to one or a few host species).
  • Predation regulates prey populations abruptly; parasitism weakens the host gradually (reducing its fitness/survival/reproduction) rather than eliminating it outright.
