Trisomy is a chromosomal numerical aberration written as 2n + 1, where one extra copy of a chromosome is present.

Chromosomal aberrations arising from a change in the number of chromosomes are called aneuploidies. They result from non-disjunction — failure of chromosomes to separate properly during cell division (meiosis or mitosis). When a gamete carrying an extra chromosome (n + 1) fuses with a normal gamete (n), the resulting zygote has 2n + 1 chromosomes — this is trisomy. A well-known human example is Down's syndrome, caused by trisomy of chromosome 21 (an extra copy of chromosome 21, i.e. three copies instead of two).
