Corrosion is the electrochemical oxidative deterioration of a metal in the environment; cathodic protection prevents it by forcing the metal to act as the cathode instead of the anode.

Corrosion is the spontaneous process by which a metal is converted into an undesirable compound (usually an oxide or hydroxide) through electrochemical reaction with substances in its environment, chiefly oxygen and moisture. The most familiar example is rusting of iron, where iron is oxidised (acting as an anode at one surface point) while oxygen is reduced (acting as a cathode elsewhere), and the Fe2+ formed is further oxidised and hydrated into hydrated iron(III) oxide (rust).

Electrical (cathodic) protection is a main way to prevent corrosion:

  • A more reactive (more easily oxidised) metal, such as zinc or magnesium, is electrically connected to the iron object that needs protection.
  • Since the more reactive metal has a more negative reduction potential, it gets oxidised preferentially, acting as the anode instead of iron. …
