Sustained (i.e. stable, observable) interference requires coherent sources of comparable amplitude.

Conditions for obtaining sustained interference of light:

  1. Coherence: the two sources must be coherent, i.e. they must emit waves of the same frequency (wavelength) and maintain a constant phase difference with each other at all times. (In practice this is achieved by deriving both sources from a single source, e.g. by division of wavefront as in Young's double slit, since two independent sources cannot maintain a fixed phase relationship.)
  2. Comparable amplitude: the two interfering waves should have the same (or nearly the same) amplitude/intensity, so the dark fringes are nearly completely dark and the bright fringes are distinct — giving good fringe contrast. …
