A stable (sustained) interference pattern requires two coherent, monochromatic sources of comparable amplitude, placed close together.

For a sustained (i.e. observable and stationary in time) interference pattern of light, the following conditions must be satisfied:

  1. Coherence: The two sources must be coherent, i.e. they must maintain a constant phase difference with time. If the phase difference keeps changing randomly, the interference pattern shifts too rapidly to be observed, and only a uniform average intensity is seen.

  2. Same frequency/wavelength (monochromatic): The two sources should emit light of the same frequency (or wavelength), otherwise the phase difference between them keeps changing with time and no stationary pattern is formed.

  3. Equal (or nearly equal) amplitude: For maximum contrast between bright and dark fringes, the amplitudes of the two waves reaching a point should be equal or nearly equal, so that at destructive interference the intensity nearly falls to zero.
