Coherent sources maintain a fixed phase relationship, which is essential because sustained (steady, observable) interference patterns require the phase difference between the overlapping waves to not keep randomly changing.

Coherent sources — definition. Two sources are said to be coherent if they emit light waves of the same frequency (wavelength) that maintain a constant phase difference with time (this constant difference can be zero or any fixed value). In practice, true coherent sources are usually derived from a single source (e.g. by division of wavefront, as in Young's double slit) rather than being two independent sources, since two independent light sources cannot maintain a fixed phase relationship due to the random nature of atomic emission.

Four conditions for obtaining sustained interference of light:

  1. Coherence. The two sources must be coherent — same frequency and constant phase difference — otherwise the interference pattern (bright/dark fringes) would shift too rapidly to be observed, and only a uniform average intensity would be seen.

  2. Same wavelength/frequency. Both sources must emit light of the same wavelength (ideally monochromatic light), since interference between different wavelengths produces overlapping patterns that wash each other out.
