Crossing over is a Prophase I event of meiosis, occurring at the pachytene stage after homologous chromosomes have paired (synapsis, zygotene) to form bivalents.

Meiosis I's prophase is elaborate and divided into five sub-stages: leptotene, zygotene (pairing/synapsis of homologous chromosomes into bivalents), pachytene (crossing over -- exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids at chiasmata), diplotene (synaptonemal complex dissolves, chiasmata become visible), and diakinesis. This exchange of segments is the physical basis of genetic recombination.
