Gibberellins promote growth (elongation, germination, flowering); abscisic acid (ABA) is the 'stress hormone' that inhibits growth and induces dormancy — the two act as physiological antagonists on many of the same processes.

Gibberellins (GA):

  • A diterpenoid growth hormone, first isolated from the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi, the causal organism of bakanae ('foolish seedling') disease of rice.
  • Causes internode elongation — the classic 'bolting' response seen in rosette plants like cabbage.
  • Breaks seed and bud dormancy, and promotes germination by inducing synthesis of the enzyme amylase in the aleurone layer of cereal grains.
  • Induces flowering in long-day plants and in cold-requiring biennials, without the plant actually needing the day-length/cold stimulus.
  • Promotes fruit-set and can produce seedless (parthenocarpic) fruit.
  • Can delay senescence in certain tissues.

Abscisic acid (ABA):

  • A sesquiterpenoid, often called the general growth INHIBITOR or the 'stress hormone' of plants.
  • Induces and maintains seed and bud dormancy — directly antagonising GA's dormancy-breaking role.
  • Triggers stomatal closure during water stress by promoting K+ (and associated water) efflux from guard cells, helping the plant conserve water — it is sometimes called the 'anti-transpirant' hormone.
  • Inhibits seed germination and vegetative growth (a growth inhibitor, the opposite of GA). …
