Respiratory Quotient (RQ) is the ratio of the volume of CO2 released to the volume of O2 taken up during respiration, and it indicates which type of respiratory substrate is being used.

RQ = (Volume of CO2 evolved) / (Volume of O2 consumed). For carbohydrates as the respiratory substrate, complete oxidation gives RQ = 1 (equal moles of CO2 released and O2 consumed, since carbohydrates already contain enough oxygen relative to carbon).
