Although the terms are sometimes used loosely as synonyms, there is a real distinction between them:
Taxonomy:

- Uses characters such as external morphology, internal anatomy, cell structure, development, and ecological information to place organisms into a hierarchical classification system (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species).
- Is essentially descriptive and comparative in approach.
Systematics:
- Is a broader field that studies the diversity of organisms as well as the evolutionary relationships (phylogenetic relationships) among them, i.e., how different groups of organisms are related to one another through common ancestry.
- The word 'systematics' is derived from the Latin 'systema', meaning the systematic arrangement of organisms, and it explicitly incorporates evolutionary history in classifying and grouping organisms, not just morphological similarity. …
