Gene therapy corrects a genetic defect at its source by delivering a normal gene into the patient's cells.

Gene therapy is a collection of methods that allow correction of a gene defect diagnosed in a child/embryo, in which a normal, functional gene is introduced into the individual (or embryo) to compensate for the defective, non-functional mutant gene. The corrective (normal) gene is typically delivered into target cells using a vector (e.g., a modified virus) that carries and inserts it.
