Biogas, produced by anaerobic microbial digestion of organic waste, is chiefly methane and is used as a fuel.

Biogas (also called 'gobar gas' when made from cattle dung) is a mixture of gases — predominantly methane (about 50-70%), along with carbon dioxide, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide — generated by the activity of anaerobic methanogenic bacteria (e.g., species of Methanobacterium) that decompose organic/biodegradable material (cattle dung, plant/agricultural waste, sewage) in the absence of oxygen, inside a sealed digester tank called a bio-gas plant.
