Biogas - primarily methane, along with CO2 and traces of other gases - is generated when methanogenic bacteria anaerobically digest organic matter such as cattle dung/plant waste; it is used as a clean fuel for cooking and lighting.

Biogas is produced in a biogas plant, where a slurry of dung (or other organic waste) mixed with water is fed into an airtight digester tank. In the absence of oxygen, a consortium of anaerobic microbes breaks down the complex organic matter in stages, and in the final step, methanogenic archaea/bacteria (such as species of Methanobacterium) convert the intermediate organic acids into methane gas along with carbon dioxide - together, this gas mixture is biogas.
