Biogas (mainly methane) is generated when a consortium of anaerobic microbes, including methanogens, break down organic waste (like cattle dung) in the absence of oxygen inside a biogas plant.

Biogas is produced in a biogas plant (gobar gas plant) where organic waste — commonly cattle dung slurry mixed with water — is fed into an airtight digester (a dome-shaped tank). Inside, several groups of anaerobic bacteria act in sequence: first, bacteria break down complex organic matter into simpler compounds like organic acids; then, methanogenic bacteria (methanogens, such as Methanobacterium) convert these into biogas — a mixture rich in methane (CH4), along with CO2, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide.
