Crossing a pure-breeding Round-Yellow pea plant with a pure-breeding wrinkled-green one gives an F2 generation in a 9:3:3:1 ratio of all four possible phenotype combinations, showing that the two traits assort into gametes independently.

Parental cross: RRYY (Round, Yellow) x rryy (wrinkled, green)

F1: all offspring are RrYy - Round, Yellow (Round R and Yellow Y are dominant), since each parent contributes one allele of each gene.

F1 x F1 (self-cross): RrYy x RrYy. Each F1 parent produces four types of gametes in equal proportion - RY, Ry, rY, ry (since R/r assort independently of Y/y) - and a 4x4 Punnett square of these gametes gives the F2 generation:

  • 9/16 R_Y_ (Round, Yellow)
  • 3/16 R_yy (Round, green)
  • 3/16 rrY_ (wrinkled, Yellow)
  • 1/16 rryy (wrinkled, green) …
