A statistics project follows a fixed sequence, each step building on the last, from picking WHAT to study to writing up WHAT was found.
The steps, in order
- Identifying a problem or area of study — deciding what question the project will actually investigate.
- Choice of target group — deciding whose data will be collected (e.g. students of a particular class, households in a locality).
- Collection of data — gathering the raw information, usually via a questionnaire or interview.
- Organisation and presentation of data — arranging the raw data into tables and charts so it becomes readable.
- Analysis and interpretation — applying the statistical tools learned earlier (averages, dispersion, correlation, index numbers) to draw out the meaning in the data.
- Conclusion — summarising what the project found in relation to the original question.
- Bibliography — listing every source consulted while doing the project.
Skipping a step early on (e.g. picking too vague a target group) tends to cause real trouble at the analysis stage later.
