Subordination of Individual Interest to General Interest
Think about the last time you were in a group project. Maybe you wanted to work on the creative part, but the group needed someone to handle the boring data entry. If everyone insisted on doing only what they personally liked, the project would never finish. That tension — between what you want and what the group needs — is exactly what this principle addresses.
The Core Idea
In any organisation — a school, a company, a cricket team — there are two sets of interests: the individual's and the organisation's. The principle of subordination of individual interest to general interest simply states that the goals of the organisation as a whole must take priority over the personal goals of any single member.
This doesn't mean crushing individuality or treating people like machines. It means that when a conflict arises between what's good for you personally and what's good for the organisation, the organisation's interest should win. Why? Because the organisation's survival and success ultimately benefit everyone in it.
Why This Principle Exists
Henri Fayol, who first proposed this as one of his 14 principles of management, observed a fundamental truth: organisations fail when people put their own convenience, ego, or short-term gain ahead of the collective purpose.
Consider a simple example. A salesperson might want to leave early on Friday. That's an individual interest. But if the office has a critical client meeting that evening, the general interest (closing the deal, maintaining the company's reputation) requires the salesperson to stay. The principle says: stay.
Fayol did not mean that managers should ignore employee welfare. He meant that no one — manager or worker — should place personal advantage above the organisation's objectives. The principle applies equally to the CEO who might want a bigger bonus and to the worker who wants an extra break.
How It Works in Practice
Organisations implement this principle through several mechanisms:
- Clear communication of goals: When everyone understands the larger purpose, they see why their personal sacrifice matters.
- Fair treatment: People accept subordinating their interests when they trust that the organisation will eventually reward their loyalty.
- Discipline and rules: Policies on attendance, deadlines, and conduct exist precisely to align individual behaviour with organisational needs.
- Leadership by example: When managers themselves sacrifice personal convenience for the organisation, it sets a powerful precedent.
The Textbook Perspective
NCERT's Business Studies textbook (Class 12, Principles of Management chapter) presents this principle as a cornerstone of effective management. It emphasises that conflict between individual and general interests is inevitable — the question is not whether it will happen, but how it will be resolved.
The textbook also notes that this principle can be achieved through: …
Discipline is one of Fayol's fourteen principles of general management, and it concerns obedience to the rules and agreements of the organisation. …
Discipline means obedience to organisational rules and honouring of agreements by employees and management alike.

Fayol's principle of subordination of individual interest to general interest means the interest of the organisation as a whole must take priority over the personal interests of individual employees.
Henri Fayol gave this as one of his 14 principles of management. It states that in an organisation the general interest (the interest of the organisation as a whole) is supreme and must be placed above the individual interest of any single employee or group. Analysis of the principle:
- Every person in an organisation has personal goals (higher pay, less work, quick promotion), and the organisation has its own goals. Sometimes these clash.
- A good manager should try to RECONCILE the two — aligning individual goals with organisational goals so that both are served.
- But where a genuine conflict remains, the individual's interest must be subordinated (given up or adjusted) in favour of the larger organisational interest. …
