Fayol's principle of subordination of individual interest to general interest means the interest of the organisation as a whole must take priority over the personal interests of individual employees.

Henri Fayol gave this as one of his 14 principles of management. It states that in an organisation the general interest (the interest of the organisation as a whole) is supreme and must be placed above the individual interest of any single employee or group. Analysis of the principle:

  • Every person in an organisation has personal goals (higher pay, less work, quick promotion), and the organisation has its own goals. Sometimes these clash.
  • A good manager should try to RECONCILE the two — aligning individual goals with organisational goals so that both are served.
