- Inbreeding depression. Continued inbreeding (mating of closely related individuals) over several generations reduces fertility and productivity/vigour of the progeny. This decline is called inbreeding depression.
- Interspecific hybridisation. In this method, males and females of two different, related species are crossed so that the desirable characters of both parents are combined in the hybrid progeny (e.g. the mule from a horse and a donkey).
- Biofortification. It is the breeding of crops with higher levels of vitamins and minerals, or higher-quality protein and healthier fats, so as to improve public health and combat 'hidden hunger' (e.g. Vitamin-A enriched carrots/spinach, protein-rich wheat).
