Bt cotton carries cry genes from Bacillus thuringiensis; the plant makes an inactive Cry protoxin that is activated in the insect's alkaline gut, binds midgut cells and lyses them, killing the pest — giving built-in pest resistance.

Concept. One important application of biotechnology is producing pest-resistant plants so that farmers need not spray harmful chemical insecticides.

Source of resistance — Bacillus thuringiensis. This soil bacterium produces proteins (Bt toxins) encoded by cry genes that are toxic to certain insect larvae. For example, cryIAc and cryIIAb control the cotton bollworms and cryIAb controls the corn borer.

Making Bt cotton. The specific cry gene(s) are isolated from B. thuringiensis and introduced into the cotton plant. The plant then expresses the gene and produces the Cry protein.

Why the toxin does not harm the bacterium/plant, but kills the insect (mechanism):

  1. In the plant (and in B. thuringiensis) the Cry protein exists as an inactive protoxin in the form of crystals.
  2. When an insect (bollworm) eats the plant tissue, the protoxin enters its gut.
  3. The alkaline pH of the insect gut dissolves the crystals and converts the protoxin into the active toxin. …
