Miller's apparatus = water flask (ocean) + gas flask with CH4, NH3, H2, water vapour + electric spark (lightning) + condenser + collecting trap -> formation of amino acids.

Diagrammatic representation of Miller's experiment on the origin of life.
Diagrammatic representation of Miller's experiment on the origin of life.

Concept: In 1953, Stanley Miller (with Harold Urey) built a closed apparatus to test whether organic molecules could have formed spontaneously under the conditions of primitive Earth, as proposed by Oparin and Haldane.

Parts to draw and label:

[!NOTE]

  • Smaller flask with water, kept boiling — represents the primitive ocean and supplies water vapour.
  • Larger flask (reaction chamber) containing a mixture of gases: methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2) along with water vapour — represents the reducing primitive atmosphere.
  • Two electrodes inside the larger flask producing a continuous electric spark discharge (at ~800 C) — simulates lightning/energy of primitive Earth.
  • Condenser — cools the gaseous mixture so it condenses.
  • U-shaped trap at the bottom — the condensed liquid collects here, and this is where the newly formed organic molecules are drawn off for analysis. …
