Palaeontological evidence = evidence from fossils; their arrangement and age in rock strata show that organisms evolved over geological time, e.g. Archaeopteryx, a link between reptiles and birds.

Palaeontology is the study of fossils — the remains, impressions or traces of once-living organisms preserved in the rocks of the earth's crust. Fossils are among the strongest, most direct evidence of evolution.

How fossils provide evidence:

  • Different-aged rock strata (layers) contain remains of different life forms; the deeper (older) the stratum, the more primitive the organisms, and the sequence upward shows a gradual change — proving that life forms have changed over time.
  • The age of a fossil can be found by radioactive dating.
  • Fossils reveal connecting links (missing links) that show common ancestry between two groups.
