In incomplete dominance the F1 hybrid is intermediate between the two parents (e.g. red x white gives pink), so no allele is fully dominant.

Incomplete dominance

Incomplete dominance is a pattern of inheritance in which one allele is not completely dominant over the other, so the heterozygote (F1) expresses a phenotype that is intermediate between the two homozygous parents. It is a deviation from Mendel's principle of dominance.

Example: Mirabilis jalapa (four o'clock plant) / snapdragon (Antirrhinum)

  • When a pure-breeding red-flowered plant (genotype RR) is crossed with a pure-breeding white-flowered plant (genotype rr),
  • all the F1 offspring (genotype Rr) are pink-flowered — an intermediate colour, not red and not white.
  • This happens because a single copy of the R allele (in Rr) produces only enough pigment for pink colour, not full red.

F2 generation (on selfing the pink F1, Rr x Rr):

GenotypePhenotype
1 RRRed
2 RrPink
1 rrWhite
  • Phenotypic ratio = 1 Red : 2 Pink : 1 White. …
