Aldehydes without α\alpha-H, like benzaldehyde, undergo the Cannizzaro reaction — a self disproportionation with conc. alkali giving an alcohol and a carboxylate salt.

Concept. The Cannizzaro reaction is a base-induced self oxidation–reduction of aldehydes that have no α\alpha-hydrogen. One aldehyde molecule is reduced to a primary alcohol while another is oxidised to a carboxylate salt.

Reaction (benzaldehyde). Benzaldehyde has no α\alpha-hydrogen, so on treatment with concentrated NaOH:

2 C6H5CHO→conc. NaOHC6H5CH2OH+C6H5COONa2\,C_6H_5CHO \xrightarrow{conc.\ NaOH} C_6H_5CH_2OH + C_6H_5COONa
