The SHE is H2\text{H}_2 (1 bar) over platinised Pt in 1 M H+\text{H}^+ at 298 K, taken as the zero of potential; its reaction is 2H++2e−⇌H22\text{H}^+ + 2e^- \rightleftharpoons \text{H}_2.

Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE).

It is the reference electrode against which all standard electrode potentials are measured, and its potential is defined as exactly 0.00 V at all temperatures.

Construction (diagram to draw): a platinum wire connected to a small square of platinised platinum foil (Pt coated with finely divided platinum black) is dipped in a solution containing H+\text{H}^+ ions at 1 M (unit activity). Pure hydrogen gas at 1 bar pressure is bubbled through the solution over the Pt foil at 298 K. The Pt foil provides the surface for the equilibrium and carries the electrical connection. Label: H2\text{H}_2 gas inlet (1 bar), platinised Pt electrode, 1 M HCl / H+\text{H}^+ solution. …
