The Standard Hydrogen Electrode is Pt (platinised) in 1 M H⁺ with H₂ gas at 1 bar and 298 K; it is written Pt∣H2(1 bar)∣H+(1 M)\text{Pt}|\text{H}_2(1\text{ bar})|\text{H}^+(1\text{ M}), has 2H++2e−⇌H22\text{H}^+ + 2e^- \rightleftharpoons \text{H}_2 as its half-reaction, and is assigned E∘=0E^\circ = 0 V.

Construction / labelled diagram (to draw): A platinum foil coated with platinum black (finely divided Pt, to adsorb H₂ and catalyse the reaction) is connected to a platinum wire and sealed in a glass tube. It is dipped into an acid solution of 1 M H+\text{H}^+ (unit activity) at 298 K. Pure hydrogen gas at 1 bar (1 atm) pressure is bubbled continuously through the solution over the platinum foil.

Cell (electrode) representation:

Pt(s) ∣ H2(g, 1 bar) ∣ H+(aq, 1 M)\text{Pt(s)}\,|\,\text{H}_2\text{(g, 1 bar)}\,|\,\text{H}^+\text{(aq, 1 M)}

(written this way when the SHE acts as the anode; reversed when it acts as the cathode).
