Corrosion of iron is an electrochemical cell: Fe oxidises at the anode, O2\text{O}_2 is reduced at the cathode, and the Fe2+\text{Fe}^{2+} formed is further oxidised to hydrated Fe2O3\text{Fe}_2\text{O}_3 (rust).

Corrosion of iron (rusting). In the presence of water and air, different spots on the iron surface behave as tiny electrodes (an electrochemical cell forms in the water film).

Anodic reaction (oxidation of iron):

Fe(s)→Fe2+(aq)+2e−(E(Fe2+/Fe)∘=−0.44 V)\text{Fe(s)} \rightarrow \text{Fe}^{2+}\text{(aq)} + 2e^- \qquad (E^\circ_{(\text{Fe}^{2+}/\text{Fe})} = -0.44\ \text{V})

Cathodic reaction (reduction of oxygen in acidic water film, H+\text{H}^+ from dissolved CO2\text{CO}_2 etc.):

O2(g)+4H+(aq)+4e−→2H2O(l)(E∘=+1.23 V)\text{O}_2\text{(g)} + 4\text{H}^+\text{(aq)} + 4e^- \rightarrow 2\text{H}_2\text{O(l)} \qquad (E^\circ = +1.23\ \text{V})

Overall cell reaction (combining, electrons balanced):

2Fe(s)+O2(g)+4H+(aq)→2Fe2+(aq)+2H2O(l)2\text{Fe(s)} + \text{O}_2\text{(g)} + 4\text{H}^+\text{(aq)} \rightarrow 2\text{Fe}^{2+}\text{(aq)} + 2\text{H}_2\text{O(l)}

The Fe2+\text{Fe}^{2+} ions are then further oxidised by atmospheric oxygen to hydrated iron(III) oxide, which is the reddish-brown rust: …
