(i) The 5f/6d/7s5f/6d/7s orbitals of actinoids are close in energy, so more of them bond → more oxidation states than lanthanoids. (ii) Lanthanoid contraction makes 2nd- and 3rd-series transition atoms almost equal in size.

(i) Oxidation states: In the lanthanoids the 4f4f orbitals are deeply buried and comparatively fixed, so mostly the +3 state occurs. In the actinoids the 5f5f, 6d6d and 7s7s energy levels lie very close together, so a variable number of electrons can be used in bonding, giving a much wider range of oxidation states.
