Actinoids are harder to study than lanthanoids because they show many more oxidation states and because they are radioactive.

Concept. Both are inner-transition (f-block) series, but the 5f5f orbitals of actinoids are more diffuse and less well shielded than the 4f4f orbitals of lanthanoids, so they participate more in bonding.

Two reasons (any two):

  1. Wide range of oxidation states. Because the 5f5f, 6d6d and 7s7s energy levels are close, actinoids show many oxidation states (e.g. +3+3 to +7+7), whereas lanthanoids are mostly +3+3. This makes actinoid chemistry far more varied and complex. …
