Roast chromite with Na2_2CO3_3/O2_2 → sodium chromate; acidify → sodium dichromate; add KCl → potassium dichromate.

Step 1 — Roasting of chromite ore (FeCr2O4FeCr_2O_4) with molten alkali in air oxidises Cr(III) to Cr(VI) as sodium chromate:

4FeCr2O4+8Na2CO3+7O2→8Na2CrO4+2Fe2O3+8CO24FeCr_2O_4 + 8Na_2CO_3 + 7O_2 \rightarrow 8Na_2CrO_4 + 2Fe_2O_3 + 8CO_2

Step 2 — Acidification of the yellow chromate converts it to orange dichromate:

2Na2CrO4+2H+→Na2Cr2O7+2Na++H2O2Na_2CrO_4 + 2H^+ \rightarrow Na_2Cr_2O_7 + 2Na^+ + H_2O
