Roast chromite with Na2CO3\text{Na}_2\text{CO}_3 in air →\to sodium chromate; acidify →\to sodium dichromate; react with KCl →\to K2Cr2O7\text{K}_2\text{Cr}_2\text{O}_7.

Manufacture of potassium dichromate from chromite ore FeCr2O4\text{FeCr}_2\text{O}_4:

Step 1 — Oxidative fusion (roasting). Powdered chromite ore is fused with sodium carbonate in excess air, oxidising chromium(III) to chromate(VI):

4FeCr2O4+8Na2CO3+7O2→8Na2CrO4+2Fe2O3+8CO24\text{FeCr}_2\text{O}_4 + 8\text{Na}_2\text{CO}_3 + 7\text{O}_2 \rightarrow 8\text{Na}_2\text{CrO}_4 + 2\text{Fe}_2\text{O}_3 + 8\text{CO}_2

Step 2 — Acidification. The yellow sodium chromate solution is acidified (with H2SO4\text{H}_2\text{SO}_4) to convert chromate to orange dichromate:

2Na2CrO4+2H+→Na2Cr2O7+2Na++H2O2\text{Na}_2\text{CrO}_4 + 2\text{H}^+ \rightarrow \text{Na}_2\text{Cr}_2\text{O}_7 + 2\text{Na}^+ + \text{H}_2\text{O}

Step 3 — Conversion to potassium salt. Sodium dichromate is treated with potassium chloride; the less soluble K2Cr2O7\text{K}_2\text{Cr}_2\text{O}_7 crystallises out: …
