Transition elements are d-block elements whose atoms or stable ions have a partially (incompletely) filled d-orbital; e.g. iron (Fe).

Definition: A transition element is one which has an incompletely filled dd-subshell either in its ground-state atom or in one (or more) of its common oxidation states. Their general valence configuration is (n−1)d1–9 ns1–2(n-1)d^{1\text{–}9}\,ns^{1\text{–}2}.
