Microwaves
What Are Microwaves?
Microwaves are short-wavelength radio waves with frequencies in the gigahertz (GHz) range. They lie between radio waves and infrared in the electromagnetic spectrum.
How Are Microwaves Produced?
Microwaves are generated by special vacuum tubes and solid-state devices:
- Klystrons
- Magnetrons
- Gunn diodes
These devices produce coherent, high-frequency electromagnetic radiation in the GHz band.
Key Applications of Microwaves
1. Radar Systems
Due to their short wavelengths, microwaves are ideal for radar (Radio Detection And Ranging). Radar is used in:
- Aircraft navigation
- Speed guns for measuring fast balls, tennis serves, and automobile speeds
2. Microwave Ovens
This is a common domestic application. The principle is based on resonant absorption:
- The frequency of the microwaves is chosen to match the resonant frequency of water molecules. …
