Paramagnetic materials are feebly attracted by a magnet, have small positive susceptibility (μr\mu_r slightly >1), and move from weak to strong field regions; their magnetisation follows Curie's law.

Properties of paramagnetic materials (any three):

  1. They are feebly attracted by a strong magnet and become weakly magnetised in the direction of the applied field.
  2. Their susceptibility is small and positive (χ>0\chi > 0) and their relative permeability is slightly greater than unity (μr>1\mu_r > 1).
  3. In a non-uniform field they tend to move from the weaker to the stronger part of the field; a freely suspended paramagnetic rod aligns parallel to the field.
  4. The magnetisation is lost as soon as the external field is removed. …
