Nuclear forces are (1) the strongest known forces, (2) very short-ranged (act only within a few femtometres), and (3) charge-independent and saturated (attractive, act between nucleons regardless of charge).

Three properties of nuclear force:

1. Strongest force in nature (at short range):

The nuclear force is the strongest of the known fundamental forces (much stronger than the electrostatic and gravitational forces) within the nucleus. It is what binds protons and neutrons together despite the electrostatic repulsion between protons.

2. Short-range force:

The nuclear force acts only over a very short range (of the order of a few femtometres, ∼10−15 m\sim 10^{-15}\ \text{m}). It is strongly attractive at distances around 1 fm1\ \text{fm}, becomes repulsive at distances less than about 0.8 fm0.8\ \text{fm}, and is practically zero beyond a few femtometres.

3. Charge independent and saturated: …
