The nuclear (strong) force binding protons and neutrons in a nucleus has several distinctive properties: it is extremely short-ranged, very strong, and independent of the electric charge of the nucleons.

Properties of the nuclear force:

  1. Short range: the nuclear force acts only over very short distances, of the order of 1–3 fm (femtometres, 10−1510^{-15} m). Beyond about 3-4 fm, it falls off rapidly to essentially zero, unlike gravitational or electrostatic forces which act over infinite range.
  2. Strongest fundamental force: within its range, the nuclear force is far stronger than the electrostatic repulsive force between protons (roughly 100 times stronger), which is what allows it to hold the positively charged protons together in the nucleus despite their mutual Coulomb repulsion.
  3. Charge independence: the nuclear force between a proton-proton pair, a neutron-neutron pair, and a proton-neutron pair is (approximately) the same, i.e., it does not depend on whether the nucleons are charged or neutral. …
