An intrinsic semiconductor is pure with equal, few electrons and holes; an extrinsic semiconductor is doped, giving a majority carrier and much higher conductivity.

Intrinsic semiconductorExtrinsic semiconductor
Pure semiconductor (pure Si or Ge), no impurity added.Doped with a suitable impurity (pentavalent or trivalent).
ne=nh=nin_e = n_h = n_i (electrons equal holes).Carrier concentrations unequal; one type dominates (ne>nhn_e>n_h in n-type, nh>nen_h>n_e in p-type).
Carriers produced only by thermal breaking of covalent bonds.Extra carriers supplied by dopant atoms.
