Sustainable development = meeting present needs without compromising future generations. Strategies: renewable/non-conventional energy (solar, wind), LPG/gobar gas, CNG, wind & solar (PV) power, mini-hydel plants, traditional knowledge, biocomposting and biopest control.

Definition of Sustainable Development:

Sustainable development is the process of economic development that meets the needs and aspirations of the present generation without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The concept was popularised by the Brundtland Commission report 'Our Common Future'. It stresses using resources so carefully that the quality of the environment and the resource base are preserved for coming generations (intergenerational equity).

Strategies for Sustainable Development:

  1. Use of non-conventional/renewable sources of energy — India depends heavily on coal and oil (thermal power), which pollute. Shifting to clean, renewable sources reduces pollution and conserves exhaustible resources.
  2. LPG and gobar gas in rural areas — traditional cooking with firewood and dung cakes causes indoor pollution and deforestation; subsidised LPG and biogas (gobar gas) plants provide cleaner fuel.
  3. CNG in urban areas — using Compressed Natural Gas in vehicles (as in Delhi) greatly reduces vehicular air pollution.
  4. Wind power — in windy regions, windmills can generate electricity without any pollution.
  5. Solar power through photovoltaic cells — India receives abundant sunlight, which can be converted into electricity using solar (photovoltaic) cells, a clean and inexhaustible source.
  6. Mini-hydel plants — small hydel plants on hill streams generate electricity locally with little environmental disturbance. …
