Sustainable development meets present needs without harming future generations; strategies include renewable energy, cleaner fuels (LPG, gobar gas, CNG), recycling/biocomposting, biopest control and traditional knowledge.

In the Kerala Plus One (DHSE) economics chapter on Environment and Sustainable Development:

Meaning - Sustainable development, as defined by the Brundtland Commission, is 'development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.' It stresses intergenerational equity - using natural resources carefully so that they remain available for those who come after us - and balancing economic growth with protection of the environment.

Strategies for sustainable development:

  1. Use of non-conventional (renewable) energy - shifting from exhaustible, polluting fuels like coal and oil to solar, wind, tidal and mini-hydel power, which are clean and inexhaustible.
  2. LPG and gobar gas in rural areas - replacing firewood and dung cakes (which cause deforestation and indoor pollution) with LPG cylinders and biogas (gobar gas) plants.
  3. CNG in urban areas - using Compressed Natural Gas in vehicles to cut vehicular air pollution in cities.
  4. Wind and solar power - promoting windmills and solar cells/heaters where conditions are suitable.
  5. Recycling and biocomposting - reusing waste and converting organic waste into manure instead of using chemical fertilizers, restoring soil health. …
