The plant cell vacuole stores materials at high concentration and, by drawing in water, helps keep the cell firm, while occupying most of the cell's volume.

A vacuole is a membrane-bound space in the cytoplasm, and in plant cells it is a particularly prominent feature, sometimes taking up as much as ninety per cent of the total cell volume. The membrane bounding it, the tonoplast, is not a passive wall — it actively transports ions and other materials into the vacuole, moving them against their concentration gradient.
